Species text
Sphaerophoria taeniata is a scarce hoverfly in Essex. When the provisional Essex Red Data list was prepared, there were only 3 recent sites, all in the extreme west of the county, as well as an un-checked record from Danbury. P.R. Harvey has subsequently collected the species from a number of other sites in the south and southwest of the county. Nationally there is a very strong concentration of records in the southern counties of England, especially Surrey, West Sussex and Berkshire. There are relatively few records north of the Thames, except for a cluster in the Brecks. The species prefers wet meadows, often with such plants as rushes and lesser spearwort, and it is not unusual to find the it in numbers on ruderal ground in the presence of mayweeds (Stubbs & Falk 2002).
